Artist Statement
I am a Southeastern contemporary artist with a wide range of experience from portraiture to landscapes to abstracts. Pastel is my medium of choice because of its range of color and ability to mix and blend with ease and quickness. Plein air painting is one of my passions and pastel lends itself to this nicely.
After teaching nearly 20 years, I have learned what I like to do and what I am good at teaching. Drawing is the bare bones of an artist’s ability—the foundation. Teaching people to see and then to draw with their eyes and not with their head is my first challenge, but their first jewel.
I would say I do realism with a pop. I am not your ordinary painter. Anyone can be ordinary, I go for the extraordinary in whatever portrait, landscape or abstract I do—it must be memorable. I want my viewers to become involved with my pieces and wonder where and what I was thinking or see what they want to see in them. They must complete the work after I present it.
For me, my talent is a gift from God to be shared and to glorify Him. The sunsets and sunrises provide a marvelous subject matter to study full-spectrum color and the beauty of nature. I use the Impressionist palette (no blacks, browns or grays).
I am an artist who strives to make my pieces sing with luminosity and captivate all who look upon their surface.
